one day during my first week in costa rica, george suggested we look for a strangler fig that he read about. strangler figs are a plant species that grow off other trees.

according to wikipedia:

They all share a common “strangling” growth habit that is found in many tropical forest species. This habit is an adaptation for growing in dark forests where the competition for light is intense.

These plants begin life when their seeds, often bird-dispersed, germinate in crevices atop other trees. These seedlings grow their roots downward and envelope the host tree while also growing upward to reach into the sunlight zone above the canopy.

neil 025george read that this one is the biggest (or one of the biggest) that has been seen.

it didn’t disappoint. check out how it dwarfed our suv.

there was a cool open-air church across the street… a great place to appreciate the wonders of nature.

costa rica has been awesome. i arrived last wednesday, spent the night in san jose and then took a bus out to the nicoya peninsula (northwest part of the country).

i was playing a bit of email tag with george and my mobile phone isn’t working here, so i wasn’t sure how long it would take to meet up with them.

the only bus to tamarindo left in the afternoon, so i hopped an earlier one to a city that is close and on the way. lucky for me, george guessed i would take that bus and met me at the station. woohoo, good adventurous friends makes for easy traveling!

steeeeretchgeorge and suzanne have been here for almost three months and we got right to surfing. the first two days we went out the conditions were not great, but i caught a few waves and was stoked. we went to three beaches and the third one provided the best weather and conditions. we were all happy and cheered each other on.

neil 022they rented a suzuki suv that is on the small side but has the 4 wheel drive that is crucial for navigating the back roads here, especially during the rainy season when little creak crossings become river crossings. fun driving!

off to begin the second leg of my costa rican adventure…

p.s. que rico translates loosely to ‘how rich/great’ (i think :-) and i wrote this post on oct. 25th
